Local Crime Concerns, Stupid Discharges and Real Life Events

Good afternoon Folks. Hope all are well and enjoying the transition to Spring. Of course, we can all do without the pollen problem. Our neighborhood oak trees are definitely working overtime this year. If I owe you a phone call, please bear with me. Jane had foot surgery on March 15, 2006, for a minor problem. Well, it turned out to be a little more involved than expected so the surgeons had to do more work than planned. If you need the name of a great podiatrist, Dr. Gary Goodman is a super guy with a heck of a bedside manner my friends! She is doing well but I am definitely reminded of why life is easier with both of us able bodied. So much for belittling house work my friends! I also want to tip my hat to Lorraine. She reminded me that it is not nice to neglect my Goods & Services listing. Well, that is being corrected immediately. I am removing the bulk of my Goods & Services providers and redoing same. This portion of my web site allows my clients with skills and services to advertise those services to my other clients. There is no expense to be listed save one -- all advertisers must commit to offering at least a 10% discount to my clients for those offered Goods & Services. The only other consideration is that I will neither endorse nor be responsible for the Goods & Services listed. I have attached as a PS the format that I prefer for Goods & Services listings. I would also expect those clients using the listed services to give me a 'heads up' about the quality provided. Client complaints may result in immediate de-listing my friends. Please don't forget to check my web site, www.staysafestreets.com, for class dates, Mylar, alarms, junior shooter classes and security surveys. Please feel free to give me a call @ 727-535-9151 or send me an e-mail if any questions.  Thank you for your patronage and Stay Safe!  Norm & Jane

Local Crime Concerns

“Fight over toilet paper ends with man dead" St. Petersburg Times February 22, 2006

I have had a rather active life but every once in a while I am still surprised how average citizens can resort to amazing levels of violence over the most mundane events. I still use the example in class of the two friends drinking tea in a St. Petersburg tea shop who started arguing about the relative merits of the teas they were drinking. One finally shoots the other to death to end the argument -- one dead and one scumbag in prison for murder. I know tea is important and all but to kill a man over tea always seemed way out there to me. Well, this one beats that!  A 56-year-old man from Marion County became enraged because there was no toilet tissue in the home so he began a violent argument with his 58-year-old male roommate. The older man grabs a rifle and the younger guy then proceeds to beat his roommate to death with a sledge hammer and a claw hammer. That my friends seems like a pretty crappy reason to kill somebody! Please don't forget that the scumbag is in charge of these events -- not the good citizen!

“Police: Girl, 14, escapes stranger" St. Petersburg Times February 25, 2006

Three of our children attended Oak Grove Middle School on Belcher road in Clearwater without any major threats to their safety. Well, times have changed I guess. A 14-year-old-girl was walking to school alone about 8:15 AM, February 24, 2006. A white male ( their term -- I much prefer scumbag), described as having short blond hair, 5 feet 10 inches tall, dark shirt with writing on it and driving a black, older-model pick-up truck with tinted windows and spots of primer paint, grabbed her by the throat from the rear. She was able to break free and ran to the school where she reported the attack. Efforts to locate her attacker were unsuccessful. Please remind your children to 'buddy up' if at all possible and if attacked run, fight and make as much noise as possible. In my opinion, it is absolutely imperative that the intended victim do everything possible to avoid being transported to a different location. I am still haunted by the image of Carlie Brucia walking quietly to her death two years ago in Sarasota. Her killer was just sentenced to death but that is of very little consolation to the family and poor Carlie!  By the way, the animal previously known as Joseph Smith, is sorry for the crime but he was on drugs so it wasn't his fault!  May he rot in prison and then die a coward's death!

"Woman's water test story indicates a likely scam” St. Petersburg Times February 25, 2006

An 83-year-old Clearwater woman answered a knock on her door about 4 PM,  February 23, 2006. A man with a woman in tow who did not speak, advised her that he was a county contractor who was working on the roadway and both persons needed to enter her home to test her water. Of course, the 'contractor' did not have identification. She advised that her water was fine but he pushed by her and obtained a cup of water from her sink. He then left saying that her water was fine. Now that is an efficient test -- he used her cup! The typical scam is that they work in pairs and gain entry on some pretext with their favorite target older citizens. The 'official' scumbag keeps the resident occupied while the other scumbag steals valuables. There are similar cases in Tampa that may be connected. He was described as 5' 6", 160 pounds, thin build, short black hair and a goatee. The female scumbag was about 5' 5", 140 pounds and had long dark hair. There was another man waiting in their car but no further info at this time. Please be sure to alert your elderly neighbors, friends and relatives of this type of scamming since they are most frequently victims. I may even go so far as to provide them a business card or something similar with your name and telephone number thereon so that when the utilities inspector, air conditioning repairman, telephone repairman, water heater repairman, roof repairman, tree trimmer, etc., shows up unexpectedly, the elderly person can hand your card to the potential scumbag 'Traveler' band member so that he may call you for approval. It is absolutely imperative that the potential thief NOT be allowed entry to the home under any pretext. Personally, every one that comes to our door is asked to produce identification before even speaking with them. It is amazing how many folks suddenly find a reason to go somewhere else particularly when I ask to see their business license and offer to call the police to check them out. Sometimes that behavior leads to real interesting responses -- usually a cloud of dust retreating into the sunset. If suspicious, please call the police immediately. They are out there my friends and this is the time of year in Florida that the Travelers decide they enjoy warm weather! Also don't forget that it is Tax Time! The IRS issued a warning to taxpayers about identity theft efforts by scam artists using "phishing" schemes to trap the unwary into providing personal information to the scammers. The ploy is to send an official looking communication to the target requesting personal information such as account numbers, passwords and/or credit card numbers. Upon receipt of same, gotcha! The IRS has located 12 separate web sites in 11 different countries attempting to obtain those details.

“Seemingly interested home buyer attacks Realtor” St. Petersburg Times March 6, 2006 &

"Agents kept file on 'creepy'"  St. Petersburg Times March 9, 2006

I always worry about realtors for what should be obvious reasons. They willingly enter homes alone with virtual strangers. A 48-year-old female St. Petersburg real estate agent spent over four hours with a young man described as well-spoken, clean cut, well dressed and a purported Drug Enforcement Agent. After visiting her office, the clean cut young man advised that he wanted to revisit a house in North St. Petersburg. As she was measuring a wall for his entertainment center, she was blind sided and pistol whipped. He displayed a gun and a 12-inch hunting knife and threatened repeatedly to kill her if she did not comply with his demands. She was then tied with plastic cable ties. He stepped out of the room and she was able to free one hand. He returned as she was trying to escape through a window. Again he pistol whipped her. She continued to resist but was subdued and locked in a closet. Eventually he left and she was able to escape and flee to a nearby home for help. In my opinion, she is one lucky, feisty lady! She admitted that she failed to follow her own rules by failing to copy his driver's license and record his tag. The scumbag is described as a slender white male, about 26-years-old, 5' 7" tall, about 150 pounds, with a medium complexion and brown eyes. He is still out there so if you are a real estate agent, be careful. Please remember, go with your instincts, obtain photo ID, record vehicle descriptions, keep your office informed of your itinerary and stick with it, report deviations from your plan, establish check in times, buddy up if possible and never forget the duck theory -- if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and waddles like a duck, it is probably a duck! As a side note, I had a female realtor and her husband visit Knight's after a seminar that they attended a few days after this heinous attack. There was some 'expert' giving advice on what to do to protect themselves and, oh, by the way, selling pepper spray and signal flags, etc. I was really impressed -- this poor agent spent $17.95 + tax for about 1/5th of one ounce 2,000,000 Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) mist dispenser with a max range of about three to five feet with virtually guaranteed exposure to the user. If you need pepper spray, which I personally strongly endorse and have frequently used on the street, visit Knight's. We have the real deal at reasonable prices and, if unsure how to use same, I will be glad to provide some assistance. By the way, the Anal Orifice (AO) prospective real estate buyer developed a reputation as a flaky, skittish thin man with steely blue eyes who never followed through after the initial contact and attempted to lure the agents to vacant properties. His picture appears on the front page of the March 9, 2006, St. Petersburg Times with the notice that the Pinellas Realtor organization is offering a $5,000.00 reward for information leading to his arrest. Let's all say Bye Bye Creepy!

"School bus used to flee gunman” St. Petersburg Times March 9, 2006

It has been an honor for me to be in the company of heroes. However, this scumbag is definitely not a hero -- more like coward to me my friends. This St. Petersburg mutt who just happens to have served time in prison for robbery, burglary and drug charges, visits his ex-girlfriend to see their child. Her husband, definitely a sterling citizen with a prior arrest record, starts an argument with the HE-RO and sticks a gun in the hero's face as he is preparing to drive away with the child. The baby's grandfather knocks the gun away and our hero runs off looking for cover. Lo and behold -- there it is, a school bus! Our hero bangs on the door and is granted entry by the bus driver who is carrying 17 elementary students. Now, somehow or other, I feel that is definitely in order to question the bus driver's judgment since it seems to me that his primary duty is to protect the school children and not some HE-RO screaming "Open up. The guy is trying to kill me!" as he is fleeing from a man with a gun! The bus driver pulls away and the pursuer fires two rounds. Now just to increase the danger to the innocent children, the hero tells the bus driver that the armed scumbag is following them in his car. Finally the armed scumbag breaks off the pursuit and the police meet the school bus. Personally, I think that Pinellas County needs a new bus driver that knows his real job -- protect the children!

"Man Stabbed Helping Puppy, Deputies Say” The Tampa Tribune March 17, 2006

What is the old police saying? "No good deed goes un-rewarded!" Well, here is another prime example. A 66-year-old man is observed dragging a puppy across a parking lot in Ruskin. A 31-year-old man and his buddy confront the scumbag about animal abuse. This must have seemed unreasonable to the abuser because he then pulls out a large steak knife and stabs the Good Samaritan twice in the upper left chest as well as a 'defensive type cut' on the right hand. The attacker was then arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and animal cruelty. Dadgum, sounds more like Attempted Murder than aggravated battery! Surprisingly the scumbag had a criminal history that includes assault on a police officer and various alcohol offenses. Very simple teaching point here my friends -- you are not in charge of the event. The scumbag is in charge and you have no idea of the level of violence that he or she may be capable of bringing to the encounter! Once again, possibly the best course of action would have been to notify the police, be a good witness and not get personally involved. If you decide to become involved, please realize that you do so at your own peril.

"Bullet Wounds Man In Apparent Road Rage” The Tampa Tribune March 17, 2006

Gee whiz, it has been a while since I have reported a senseless road rage. However, here we go again! This incident occurred about 7 PM in a bank parking lot. The 43-year-old victim/scumbag, whose wife and daughter were in the car, was exiting a bank via an 'exit only' drive when a green Ford Explorer decided to enter the bank property via the exit. The two men exchange words. The 43-year-old gets out of his car, approaches the SUV and breaks one of the windows in the SUV. The SUV driver, formerly victim but now scumbag, must really be fond of his windows because he then pulls a gun and shoots the 43-year-old once through the left hip. Of course, he then drives away! The SUV driver is described as a black male between 40 - 50 years, thin build, wearing a light T-shirt and prescription glasses. The SUV is described as a green, two-door older model in poor condition with some type of graphics or advertisement on its sides. Too bad he ran away -- the SUV driver may have been an excellent test case for the Protection of Persons and Property Act. Now he is just a scumbag! I am particularly upset with the 43-year-old -- his wife and daughter witnessed him acting the fool and then getting shot! Besides, what real man wants to expose his family to that potential level of violence?

Stupid Discharges?

“Teens' gunplay ends in death” St. Petersburg Times February 22, 2006

I have reported too dadgum many 'stupid discharges' over the years but this incident is unique in my experience because no one claimed that they "didn't know the gun was loaded!" In this St. Petersburg criminal act, a 17-year-old and his 18-year-old roommate decided to have fun and point loaded guns at each other; apparently a routine occurrence. The 17-year-old had a loaded 9 mm handgun with the hammer locked to the rear in single action mode and the 18-year-old had a rifle. This time the 17-year-old "accidentally" (read totally idiotic) pulled the trigger and shot his buddy in the face thereby killing him! The shooter, based on his apparent willful and wanton disregard for human life was charged with negligent manslaughter. The 21-year-old owner of the handgun stated that "I told them a hundred  . . . times, don't point guns at each other." He also said that he threatened to beat them up if they didn't stop playing with guns. Now that is an adult way to handle a problem of that magnitude! I mean, why go to the trouble of securing the weapons and throwing these two mutts out of the house before someone was killed? The firearm owner was arrested and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. My opinion -- wrong charge! How about accessory to murder? The guns in the home belonged to the adult. He should have acted as an adult and locked the weapons up  in general because they were firearms and specifically since the two younger morons apparently routinely and persistently demonstrated complete, abject, wilful disregard for their personal safety and the safety of others by playing with loaded guns. Oh, by the way, the 21-year-old stated that he did not feel responsible for having loaded guns around the house. It must have been the gun manufacturers fault -- no warning label about letting idiots have access to loaded guns!

Folks, I very seldom reprint entire news stories but this was so disturbing that I wanted to share it with you in it's entirety. In my four decades of instructing, I have never heard of such stupid, reckless behavior. As you read the article, it should become apparent that the fault does not lie solely with the "instructor" but the entire chain of command. The instructor's major deficiencies were recognized in 2000 and the instructor warned to cease and desist. The instructor and the entire chain of command, in my personal and professional opinion, share the blame for the needless death. Henceforth, I now have a new term for persons who do stupid things with guns -- Ultroon because this has to be the ultimate in stupidity because alleged professionals were responsible!

Firearms instructor was warned  Basic gun rules broken in police recruit's death

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/

metro/cobb/stories/0304metgrand.html

By BRENDEN SAGE          The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

                                                                                                Published on: 03/04/06

Recruits in a Cobb County police firearms class were worried about an instructor's teaching methods moments before he shot and killed a member of the class, an investigative report released Friday shows. In fact, the report said that recruits in Cobb Sheriff's Deputy Al Jackson's class didn't want to follow his instructions to point weapons at their classmates, and that Jackson physically moved them and their guns to bear on one another. Jackson shot and killed Tara Drummond, a 23-year-old Kennesaw Police Department recruit, on Sept. 13, at the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy in Austell. The report also says that in 2000, the director of the police academy forbade Jackson in writing from using live weapons in class, and a variety of weapons instructors said Jackson violated the most rudimentary tenet of firearms instruction: Don't point a working gun, loaded or not, at a person. Cobb police officials on Friday released a summary of their investigation into the fatal shooting. The report became public after a Cobb County grand jury declined Thursday to indict Jackson, 49, on any crime. The grand jury was asked to consider two misdemeanor charges against Jackson, reckless conduct and involuntary manslaughter, according to documents filed in court. The police investigation, completed in November, did not recommend charges against Jackson, Cobb Public Safety Director Mickey Lloyd said. The report released Friday said there was no criminal intent by Jackson but was critical of his teaching methods. "The class and the instructors were armed with functioning weapons, magazines and utility belts," the report said. "Sergeant Jackson instructed the students to point their weapons at each other. "The students stated they were pointing their weapons at the wall to avoid direct aim at their classmates. ... Students were verbally and physically moved into this face-to-face position by Sergeant Jackson. "The drill included dropping the magazine in the weapon, reloading with a spare magazine, charging the weapon with a dummy round, pointing the weapon at a fellow student, and pulling the trigger. "Sergeant Jackson completed the first course of fire and transitioned to his second magazine. The weapon discharged and struck Recruit Tara Drummond in the chest." Bob Sanderson, assistant director of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, said Friday the exercise was a significant departure from normal training procedures. "Even with simulations, you don't line up students across from each other and practice loading and aiming and shooting at someone," Sanderson said. "There are drills you do, where you drop your magazine, aim and fire, but you do it on the firing range. I never heard of anyone conducting their drills that way. That is completely contrary to what I know of." Sanderson said a fake gun — a molded solid piece of plastic — and dummy bullets would normally be used for such classroom exercises. Dummy rounds are "blanks" designed to simulate the weight and feel of a live round, but without any projectile, Cobb Sheriff's Col. Don Bartlett said. The synopsis of the police investigation was not clear on how a live round — the fatal bullet — came to enter Jackson's 9 mm semiautomatic handgun. Police recovered the shell casing and the projectile from the training classroom. All ammunition is banned from the building, and state policy bans any working firearm — loaded or not — from police academy classrooms, officials said. The state oversees the center in Austell and nine other regional police academies. The Austell academy is operated by Cobb County under a contract with the state. "The lab also advised that the projectile was ammunition generally used at a live fire range," the report said. Jackson, a 23-year veteran of the sheriff's office who had taught at the academy for 10 years, "stated that the dummy rounds were stored in a range box which he had left in the classroom. The dummy rounds had been used on a live fire range a few weeks prior to the incident. ... [Jackson] had not checked the dummy rounds after they came off the range or before he inserted them into his weapon." Sanderson said any ammunition should be checked and rechecked as it passes from different locations. "Certainly, safety would require that you re-inventory your dummy rounds and containers for your ammunition so you make sure you don't risk mixing live with dummy rounds," Sanderson said. The report also concluded that "there appeared to be little review by North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy Staff on how Sergeant Jackson taught this class." Carole Morgan, director of the training center, said Friday instructors were following standard procedures when the shooting occurred. "Everything that we were doing was consistent with what we should have been doing," Morgan said. "There is no live ammunition in our classes." Morgan said she had not seem the Cobb police report. She said the academy interviewed all of the staff, but it would not release details about the academy's response to Drummond's death until all the investigations are complete. The Cobb Sheriff's Office still has an open administrative personnel investigation. Cobb police released only the investigative synopsis Friday, a four-page document that's part of a larger 2,500-page report on the shooting. Police declined to release the entire report because personnel details were being redacted. The summary on Jackson concludes in fairly blunt terms: "He deviated from the basic fundamentals of firearms safety which resulted in this tragedy." Jackson's attorney, Lance LoRusso, could not be reached Friday.

        1. Intruders enter home; grandma greets them with loaded gun

SUMMIT COUNTY -- A local great-grandmother faced danger head on as intruders entered her home.
But as they quickly discovered - she could hold her own. Eleanor L., 75, said she keeps her .380 handgun loaded and nearby at all times. "I already had the gun out," she said. "Somebody was breaking into my house so I took the gun out and went to the door. They flew." That's why she was ready when the suspects entered her west Akron home Monday morning. She'd been robbed before and wasn't about to let it happen again

   2. Armed woman sends robber fleeing

By Becky Pallack

Arizona Daily Star

A robber got some spare change and a scare when he threatened a woman in Midtown on Monday morning. The 56-year-old woman was walking near East Fort Lowell Road and North Country Club Road when a man dressed in black approached her and demanded money, said Officer Dallas Wilson, a Tucson Police Department spokesman. The robber implied he had a gun, so the woman complied with his order and gave him $1.50, hoping he would leave, Wilson said. Then, thinking her life was in danger, she drew a Smith & Wesson revolver and pointed it at the robber, who ran away.

The woman — whose name was not released by police — had a concealed-weapon permit, Wilson said. "She was in fear for her life and she defended herself appropriately," he said. Police have no suspects in the case.

        3. Hi Major Norm, Just thought you’d like to know…

Scumbag (& a few other choice words I’d like to use) David (my own personal nut case)  was arrested again on Saturday 2/11, sometime between 5-6 pm .  Boy, talk about an angel watching over me!  I was supposed to be at a pre-wedding dinner that night for my nephew/godson.  Woke up w/a sore throat that day.  Did some work in the a.m.  Then I felt awful, so hoped to take a power nap, but could not sleep.  So I worked on my computer,  which is not far from my front door.  Were it not for the change in plans, well, God only knows what might have happened.  Around 5 pm, my doorbell rang.  I looked out, saw it was HIM & freaked.  Called 911 & got my gun immediately.  (I was home alone.)  911 operator was the biggest pain.  She kept trying to get me to put my gun down & telling me I had hung up on her (not so!)  Told her I might have to put the phone down but would not disconnect.  Told her I would put the gun down once I saw  at least one squad car outside, not before.  Boy did she get snippy!  Police, who were actually really nice & helpful this time, told me she relayed to them that there was a man in my house who was refusing to put the gun down!!  Dumb….I was so mad.  (Fortunately, the arresting officer knows me by now & kind of figured it out…)  But then I talked to a friend who is a police officer in TX.  He said I should listen to myself on the 911 tape before I start complaining….Maybe he’s right…..Seemed like forever.  I could swear it was at least 15 minutes before they got here.  Arresting officer said it was about 3.  So maybe my perception was a little off…..  He was a huge help, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt!  Don’t care what the 911 operator said.  Her & her stupid $8/hr job would not save my life…All the (Department Deleted) police know I have a gun & they all know I am anything but trigger happy.  I was very happy to have the gun…and even happier not to have to use it. Anyway, when he rang the doorbell, I did not reply.  He began to escalate & started ringing it more.  Then he broke in through my locked gate to my back yard.  He started shaking my glass doors, got them open a few inches, stuck his hand in & threw a pebble inside or somethg.  Kept trying to get in.   I knew it was only a matter of time…. At this point, I got really scared.  My glass doors are close to 50 yrs old.  I think even I could kick them in…..Police arrived just in time.  I put the gun down on my dresser.  (Probably should have hid it, so scumbag would not get it, right?   Gosh, it’s hard to think of everythg when everyone is screaming & you are terrified!)  Anyway, I went running out the front & got behind the cops (w/their guns drawn).  One had me unlock one gate; others broke through the other gate.  David put up a fight, but they got him down fairly easily this time.  Would not get in squad car & they threatened to taser him.  I told him, “David, just do what they say or they will hurt you.”  Told him earlier when he was face down & cuffed I told him “I don’t want to keep putting you in jail, but I’m SCARED of you!!  Please, just leave me alone!”  He said he just wanted to know if his dog was still alive & ok.  I told him “yes, & I love her.”  Took her outside so he could see her before they hauled him off.  So sad.  He is sooooooo sick.  I truly believe the only place he can function is locked up.  I’ve had an injunction against him since 2001….Whenever he gets out, he eventually comes back here. Yes, I had a clear shot through my glass doors.  Guess legally I could have done it.  But morally could not….. He’s charged w/burglary, resisting arrest, violating injunction & (the biggie I understand under some “woman’s law”)  --aggravated stalking.  DA said he has a 2nd & a 3rd degree felony & should get a MINIMUM of 15 yrs this time.  Wow!  I feel so badly for him…He’s bipolar;  cops said he was very drunk…But I’ll surely sleep a lot better at night & society will be safer for it.   I’ll definitely move before he gets out next time. So I have not had to shoot it, thank heavens, but I sure have been glad to own that gun on 2 occasions now!  Who said a gun is “the great equalizer?”  Charlton Heston?? If you want to use any of this, feel free…..Perp is (Deleted) if ya want to look him up on the FDLE web site……

Peace J!  Mary E.
