LOK, Ugly Events, Crime Stats & Dumb Stuff

Good evening Folks. I must admit that it seems that the Tampa Bay Region has been on a homicidal, destructive binge since mid-November. I will address those events during this tip but I am at the point I just don't want Jane out by herself even with her skill sets. It is well established that the Holidays are a dangerous period but we are outdoing ourselves this year. The December 16, 2004, LOK meeting has been rescheduled for January 13, 2005. We were having problems scheduling speakers as well as the event due to the holidays. The January meeting will follow our usual schedule of sign-in, waivers and refreshments from 6 - 7 PM, seminar from 7 - 8 PM (9/11 Paramedic & a client whose child was kidnapped in line with the Sally Fields movie, 'Not Without My Children') and then machine guns, otherwise known as Rock N' Roll, from 8 - 9:30 PM. The cost is $15.00 and includes firearm rental, eyes & ears, seminar, range time, instruction and targets. Ammunition is an additional expense as usual. The cost for non-firing attendees is $10.00. Hopefully April will show up for free chair massages again. She does a great job and definitely appreciates tips!   I am sorry to announce that Knight Shooting Sports had a major asset and a true American fighting man temporarily terminate his employment this week. Major Howard Hall, USMC, has been reassigned to duty in Iraq. Howard was the moving force behind the 'Gunrunners' program which will be continued by Ed Shelp. Please join us in our prayers for Howard's safe return late next year. If you see him before he leaves, a loud Semper Fi is definitely in order!   See you at Knight's and please don't forget -- Knight's and yours truly gift certificates make excellent Holiday gifts! In spite of what is going on in our society, Jane and I wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!   See you at Knight's! Tnx  Norm & Jane

Ugly Events
Tampa Tribune "Slain Woman Was Diver, Skier, Student" November 16, 2004
St. Petersburg Times "Slaying has community grasping for answers" November 16, 2004

This event started an ugly month in our area. A 25-year-old woman goes to an address in Tampa on November 12 to inspect a roof for hurricane damage. Her parents reported her missing the next day so police went to the last known location and found her clothing about five feet from the house's boat dock floating in the river. They then found the woman's body. They questioned the 27-year-old male scumbag upset and determined that he had used her car, credit cards, found DNA evidence and had 19 marijuana plants in the home. I realize that there are many jobs such as insurance adjusters, real estate agents, etc., that require the employee to go to stranger's homes but really believe that they should be extra cautious and establish contact procedures before they enter the facility and after they leave. We would call this a 'float plan' if we were boating. Of course, it is always best to meet the person somewhere public, record a form of ID (auto tag or driver's license) and then go to the location. Of course, it is even better to not go alone and able to protect yourself if things go bad!

St. Petersburg Times "Gunman kills two, self at Gateway mall" November 19, 2004
St. Petersburg Times "Shooting is last act of a traumatic, violent life" November 20, 2004

A 25-year-old walks into a Radio Shack and simply opens fire with a Glock . 40 caliber handgun. He kills a 19-year-old employee and a 23-year-old customer, shoots and blinds a 30-year-old employee and then kills himself. He did not shoot another employee and customer also in the store during the rampage. No one knows why. He was not on the store's list of customers and appeared to simply have walked in off the street and opened fire for no discernible reason. Now here is the part that baffles me -- the scumbag had a history of violence, to include several felonies, but had never had charges brought against him for his violent acts by the victims to include a violent road rage earlier that day. That is why he was able to legally purchase the Glock on November 9, 2004. There was simply no legal reason to deny the purchase! As far as tactics, not much I can think of to be perfectly honest except to run like hell as one surviving employee did. A surviving female customer simply laid down on the floor. As far as self-defense efforts to include using your own firearm, time would have been against you since the shocking event was measured in seconds and conducted at very close ranges. Just keep this in mind my friends -- most acts of violence are not singular events. I strongly recommend making reports to law enforcement when violence occurs. This is the reason why -- it escalates law enforcement response just like domestic violence!

St. Petersburg Times "Man shoots self after killing wife, taking kids" November 24, 2004

A 27-year-old man, 6' 4" and 235 pounds, and his 25-year-old wife lived in Mulberry and had three young children. They had a history of increasingly violent felony level domestics with the wife being the victim in all cases. Due to the history of these events, she filed for a restraining order in October. When she advised her husband that she wanted a divorce, he tried to choke her to death during another beating. He told her that he was going to kill her and then himself. On Tuesday, November 15, 2004, he was half successful. He shot and killed his wife in their home, called his mother and advised her that he did so, picked up his children from the day care and then, when faced with a police roadblock, tried to shoot himself to death. This is truly a situation where the scumbag should have shot himself first rather then his poor wife! Simply stated, women trapped in these type situations cannot rely on the courts and law enforcement to protect them. Restraining orders are frequently the only recourse but may simply not be effective and actually escalate the level of violence. You must get the authorities involved if for no other reason to start compiling a list of the violations. But remember, law enforcement officers are, in my opinion, simply "Armed Historians"!

St. Petersburg Times "Man dies in crash after Clearwater carjacking" December 1, 2004

A mid 20's scumbag pulls an early 50's woman from her Dodge Stratus at a Clearwater restaurant, tells her and her sister that he has a gun and then drives off. This happened at about 6:45PM November 30, 2004. The vehicle was spotted heading east bound on Gulf-to-Bay and Clearwater units began forming to make a felony stop. Without any action initiated by Clearwater police, the driver drives right into a power pole by the Bayside Bridge and kills himself. That's referred to as Suicide By Dodge! The ladies were in a lighted parking lot on a main north-south roadway in the early evening. Fortunately both women chose to comply and not take a chance of dying for a piece of property! Good thing they weren't driving a Mercedes -- that may have been worth a fight! Foreign car repairs are so expensive!

St. Petersburg Times "Subway customer may be witness" December 6, 2004
St. Petersburg Times "Subway robber fires when register sticks" December 7, 2004
St. Petersburg Times "Store robbery not what she imagines" December 14, 2004

At 7:38:41PM, December 5, 2004, a young man leaves the Subway located on Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa. At 7:39:07PM, two scumbag armed robbers entered the restaurant. There were two women in the store -- the 22-year-old was shot and killed when the cash register drawer stuck and wouldn't open and the 37-year-old was wounded in the abdomen after she gave them the money from the register drawer and began fighting with one of them. The cold blooded part was that the 22-year-old was shot once and then shot again when lying on the floor. The difference between life and possible death can be as little as 26 seconds my friends. The difference between life and death can be a sticking cash register drawer or fighting with an armed robber! It appears that these two scumbags have committed other armed robberies but this was the first time that innocent persons were shot. Tampa PD was able to locate the witness and hopefully will capture these cowards before they harm anyone else. They probably liked the feeling when they shot the two women! I mean, after all, the best victims are helpless victims!

St. Petersburg Times "Police: Driver used SUV as weapon" December 7, 2004

It must be the water or something. People are escalating to massive violence for absolutely minor, irrelevant BS it seems. Now picture this -- three teenage boys (one 14 and two 16) were bouncing a golf ball in a parking lot in St. Augustine. The ball took a bounce and accidentally hit the roof of an SUV driven by a 47-year-old woman. The boys apologized to the woman for the accident and walked away. The woman started to drive away but then made a rapid U-turn and attacked the boys with her car -- citizen to instant scumbag just that quick! She ran over a median and hit the 14-year-old and one of the 16-year-old boys knocking over a light pole as she did so. She then pursued the other 16-year-old over two medians, hit a utility box and then stood by calmly smoking a cigarette after a witness told her to wait for the police. A witness said that she rapidly accelerated when going after the boys. The 14-year-old suffered massive head trauma but the older boy was treated and released with minor injuries. Her excuse was that the boys threw rocks at her car -- no rocks were found in the parking lot! According to her husband, the woman has a history of mental illness. Geez, I can't believe that!

St. Petersburg Times "Gunman was in trouble with the law" December 9, 2004

Approximately 5:30PM, November 7, 2004, a 42-year-old registered sex offender, probation violator, drug abuser and all around scumbag felon, who was driving a car stolen from his sister and carrying a stolen . 22 caliber pistol, sideswiped another vehicle on Park Boulevard and Tyrone. He leaves on foot and crosses Tyrone into the Walmart parking lot followed by an unarmed, off-duty corrections deputy. The scumbag attempts to steal a car and is confronted by the deputy. The scumbag then points the stolen gun at the deputy and tells him to "back off" and then enters Park Street attempting to steal a car. The drivers drive away and the scumbag is then confronted by an armed off-duty state Alcohol, Beverage & Tobacco (ABT) agent who is leaving the Walmart with his wife and two children, aged 10 and 14, in his minivan. Agent warns scumbag to drop his gun. Scumbag fires at the agent -- misses. Agent fires at scumbag -- bye bye scumbag! All this happened in plain view of the agent's family. It was extremely traumatic for his family to see him take a life but Thank God his children didn't see their dad shot by this piece of garbage. Apparently this could be a case of Suicide by Cop. The scumbag actually told his girlfriend on November 21, 2004, to tell his kids good-bye since he was going down soon and then spit on her as he left. Oh, by the way, the deceased had in his possession several pieces of crack, a crack pipe and drug paraphernalia as well as a stolen firearm. From my perspective, all involved to include the deputy, the citizens who were potential carjack victims and especially the ABT agent did the right thing -- they were unhurt! The citizens simply drove away.

St. Petersburg Times "As violence goes, we're up there" December 9, 2004

Just to make you feel better, the St. Pete Times published violent crime rates compiled by the FBI per 100,000 persons with population densities of more than 250,000 people for 2003. The Tampa Bay Region (Clearwater, Tampa & St. Petersburg) has a rate of 863.8 per 100,000. The only area with a higher rate (883.0 per 100,000) is the Baltimore and Towson, Maryland region! If this trend continues, we may be Number 1 for 2004! Now that is a real comforting thought for the New Year my friends.

St. Petersburg Times "Gunman shoots mother, 2 children in Hillsborough" December 11, 2004
St. Petersburg Times "Fear, abuse led up to shooting" December 12, 2004

On December 10, 2004, an apparently long standing domestic dispute exploded when the 38-year-old ex-husband ambushed his wife and their two children, 12 and 13-years-old, as they returned home about 9:13PM. The scumbag father, armed with a . 38 caliber revolver, rushed up and shot his wife, seriously wounding her and then shot and killed his son. He then chased his daughter down the street as she screamed for help. He caught her then shot her dead. He then killed himself with the last round fired. Once again, the abuser had a long, ugly and dark history of extremely violent domestic abuse. It does not appear that the wife went to any length to document the crimes he committed. Remember please, once again these events were escalatory and progressive in nature!

St. Petersburg Times "Driver crashes rushing from shooting" December 14, 2004

Well, finally a non-innocent victim! This 18-year-old mutt and his 18-year-old female friend drove to a prearranged location in the Greenwood section of Clearwater to sell drugs. I know this area because I worked this area while employed by Clearwater Police Department. So here they are at 1:35PM, dealing with a couple of local denizens doing their little drug transaction when the locals decided to do a rip. The two scumbags grabbed at Velez's drugs and then shot him three times -- arm, leg and abdomen as the 18-year-old female tried to drive away. During her frantic flight to Morton Plant, this dummy crashes her car into a truck, drives away from that scene and then cuts off an ambulance to get their attention. These two are pending charges for various offenses and the shooters are still in the wind. This is simple -- if you do dope, you are a dope! Sounds like urban renewal to me!

St. Petersburg Times "Man abducts woman from parking lot" December 15, 2004

This is a scary event my friends. It is lunch time and a woman exits the Countryside BB&T bank on December 14. A black male scumbag walks up to her, says "excuse me," punches her in the mouth thereby breaking a tooth, forces her into her own car, steals her money and jewelry, drives her a few miles south, rapes her at gunpoint in plain sight of US Highway 19, forces her out of the car and drives away! Dadgum, that could have been anyone. That BB&T branch is definitely not an isolated site and seems to always be busy. No one saw a thing. She apparently did not scream or otherwise attract attention to her plight. She didn't fight and allowed herself to be transported. He was not turned into a cockroach. In my opinion, she is very lucky to be alive. Now I am concerned that this will not be a single incident. Look at the day from his perspective -- made some money, scored some jewelry, stole a nice car and raped, humiliated and abused a good citizen! Quite a day for a scumbag my friends. Please advise me if you want to see the composite and I will forward by separate email. We need to get this bastard off the streets Now! The suspect is described as a black male, 25 - 30 years old, medium build, scruffy hair, unshaven and last seen wearing a blue and beige flannel shirt over a dirty T-shirt and dirty jeans. Scumbag is also armed with a handgun. The stolen vehicle is a 1998 black two door Chevrolet Cavalier with Florida tag # X96-QWG. The windows are darkly tinted, there is a baby car seat in the vehicle and there are WQYK bumper stickers. If you observe the vehicle and / or have any information, please contact the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office robbery Unit at 727-582-6200. Be careful please. I don't want anything unpleasant to happen to my friends!

Tampa Tribune "Shot suspect is accused in other holdups" December 16, 2004

Tuesday, November 14, 2004, a 35-year-old scumbag armed robber did a holdup at a North Dale Mabry Starbucks. During the course of the armed robbery, the scumbag carjacked an 18-year-old man sitting in a pickup outside the Starbucks. He then had the teenager drive him at gunpoint to a location about a mile away where he exited the pickup and ran into the dark like an animal. Later that evening, Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies received word that he was in a taxicab. They worked with the cab company to alert the driver who stopped at a local stop & rob (convenience store) under the pretext of buying a cup of coffee. The driver exited the vehicle and four deputies surrounded the vehicle and ordered the scumbag out at gunpoint. This nitwit pulls a . 357 caliber Taurus and three of the four deputies put four rounds into him. To top that off, the moron somehow or other shoots himself in the head. He is then bay flighted to St. Joseph's Hospital. The deputies also find another 27-year-old scumbag curled up on the floorboard in the back seat. This mutt has a police scanner, cocaine and marijuana and is charged appropriately. At least he had sense enough not to get shot. The 18-year-old's compliance bothers me. Here he is, at the mercy of some nut job with a gun and allows himself to be transported. He was very lucky that the scumbag didn't simply shoot him and then drive away. Oh well, perhaps the mutt didn't have a valid license. I am not if favor of letting anyone move you from one place to another -- that other place will always be more isolated and of his selection. By the way, the scumbag is a real deal scumbag. He either has been or will be charged for five other armed robberies (Babies R Us, The fresh Market, Albertson's, Village Inn and Bob Evans Restaurant) between December 7 and December 10. He was also on probation for drug and forgery convictions in New York and Nevada. From my analysis, this is a serious career criminal with absolutely nothing to lose -- a very dangerous man!

Dumb Stuff
St. Petersburg Times "Robbery note had a surprise on the back" November 19, 2004

Now this is cool! I always used to revel in matching wits with the master criminals. Yeah, right. Most of these morons are really dimwits. Speaking of dimwits, let me introduce you to Bonnie & Clyde. This master criminal and his girlfriend decided to rob the Pinellas County Employees Federal credit union on November 9, 2004. So Clyde needs a note. He asks Bonnie to write the holdup note -- perhaps he couldn't write! She writes the note on the first piece of paper that she finds and does his holdup at 10:15AM. He flees with cash and leaves the note behind. Ooops -- the note was written on one of his own deposit slips. Gee, I wonder if that made it easier for Clearwater PD to ID the scumbag? Meanwhile, these two scumbags rob a bank in Kentucky and hop a bus back to Clearwater (better weather perhaps) and Clearwater PD is tipped off by Kentucky police. Guess who is waiting for their bus when it arrives in Clearwater? Betcha it wasn't the Welcome Wagon!

The Defense of the Realm

I want to thank Halyn for this interesting article and a new defense to use when attacked by scumbags. In my opinion, this Dr. Ian Stephen, who is an "Honorary Lecturer" in Forensic Psychology at a university in Glasgow is a few bricks short of a full load. The last guy from the UK who espoused this kind of BS was a loser named Neville Chamberlain. You remember him -- the great Hitler appeaser. Stephen's advice to Britons who are attacked is to adopt a stance of 'active passivity' since if they resist, the attacker will become violent. This clown says that it is important "not to affront or startle the burglar in any way, not simply out of a regard for their feelings, for whose hurt the householder may liable, but to avoid arousing an aggression which it is expressly forbidden to resist." Damn -- too bad our many thousands of scumbags can't read. If they could and saw this load of crap, they would all stowaway on the first flight to London! What the Hell is 'active passivity' when facing a home invasion? I'll be passive as soon as Jane and I have to stop and reload while standing over the 'stopped invaders' who have multiple smoking holes in the center lines of their useless bodies!   No wonder the world is going into the toilet.
