Tip #70
LOK, Q&A, Knight's Korner & Local Events
Good morning Folks. Jane and I hope that all have a safe, no hurricane Labor
Day. Frances is a very powerful storm that needs to stay out in the Atlantic
Ocean somewhere. Florida sure doesn't need another storm so quickly. In that
regard, one of my clients who witnessed Charley up close and personal, strongly
recommends that you add heavy duty tarpaulins to your survival kit. This will
serve to help protect your home's interior after the storm if you have roof
damage. Another client advised that it would also be helpful to have either a TV
or radio on timer while away from home. This will help create the illusion of
normalcy that you require during absences. It is my opinion that many burglaries
are committed by those folks we either invite into our neighborhoods to perform
repairs and maintenance as well as those folks who frequent our neighborhoods
such as delivery and service persons. The September 16, 2004, LOK meeting will
follow our usual schedule of sign-in, waivers and refreshments from 6 - 7 PM,
seminar from 7 - 8 PM (burglary prevention) and then firing from 8 - 9:30 PM.
Sorry but no machine guns this month! We will try for 'Rock & Roll' for the
November 16, 2004, meeting. The firing event will be 'Handgun Bingo' with a
twist -- one hand only. This should be interesting! The cost is $15.00 and
includes firearm rental, eyes & ears, seminar, range time, instruction and
targets. Ammunition is an additional expense as usual. The cost for non-firing
attendees is $10.00. Hopefully April will show up for free chair massages again.
She does a great job and definitely appreciates tips! Please send me an email if
you want to pre-register. Tnx Norm & Jane
PS -- You may want to take a look at Jon Gutmacher's website (www.FloridaFirearmsLaw.com).
Jon recently revised the site and it is well done. Jon also added a new feature
that answers questions posed by his readers. Jon's site is definitely on my
favorite's list!
St. Petersburg Times "Man killed over hair quip,
deputies say" August 16, 2004
You have heard me state in class that it "Is easier to
avoid it than to extricate yourself from it" and "The fight isn't over until the
scumbag says it is over." I have also stated that "you don't know who you are
dealing with." This really highlights what kind of world we live in and just
scares the crap out of me. A 23-year-old man was in the lobby of an apartment
building. A 20-year-old man and his younger brother walked by and the
23-year-old said "nice afro" to the teenager. The 20-year-old brother goes
ballistic, returns to his apartment and grabs a butcher knife, runs back into
the lobby, jerks open the elevator door and then stabs the 23-year-old several
times in the stomach. The 23-year-old died while being treated at the North
Broward Medical Center. By the way, the victim's girlfriend was in the elevator
when the stabbing occurred! The 20-year-old scumbag's life is also over -- he
has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery. The teenager
with the "nice afro" was also charged with evidence tampering. Holy crap -- what
a stupid reason to commit a brutal murder! I'll bet that this mutt had a
history of violent behavior to include road rage, assault, battery, aggravated
battery, underage drinking and drug abuse.
St. Petersburg Times "Woman shot at parent's' door"
August 24, 2004
Here we go again! Some moron opens a door and shoots a
family member. His wife hears the front door rattle and sees a face in the
window at 5 AM on August 23, 2004. She runs to her husband who is in deep sleep.
She finally wakes him and he grabs his . 357 Magnum, runs to the door, unlocks
same, pulls it open and shoots his 31-year-old daughter in the abdomen. Of
course, this is made even worse because the daughter's two children, aged 10 and
four respectively, were watching as their grandfather shot their mother!
Dadgum it -- know what you are doing! The father said "I opened the door and
saw a figure pop up and I don't even remember pulling the trigger. The gun just
went off." The gun didn't just go off -- some untrained, careless, unsafe moron
pulled the trigger as a reflex action. Well, here is an excellent example of why
I always push for FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER! You must make a conscious effort to
squeeze the trigger if your finger is not on the trigger. Besides, he did not
have to open the door! Why not ask a simple question like who are you before
you open the damn door? Why not call the police if you are not inclined to
question the person at your door? Well, at least he didn't kill his
grandchildren's mother! Happy Mother's Day!
