Tip #57

LOK, Ugly Local Events & Morons With Guns

Good afternoon Folks. I hope that this email finds all doing well and staying safe. I am including an advisory for the November 12, 2003, LOK meeting with the same approach used in October. The meeting will follow the standard format of registration, sign-in and refreshments from 6 - 7 PM, a seminar on Internet Sexual Predators of Children/Adults from 7 - 8 PM and then rapid fire pistol firing vs. moving targets from 8 - 9:30 PM. The cashier at Knight's has the LOK registration forms at the register so that you may pre-register before the 12th. You may also email me and I will send you the registration form via email so that you can print same and then bring with you to the meeting. The only stipulation is that you must date and sign in the presence of a witness at Knight's! Also, please note that I have a Tactical 350 round course for November 9 from 7:45 AM to 12 PM. This is a great course and I have a few spaces left. Finally, I also have a Ladies only CWP November 16 and coed CWP's November 15 & 22. I have room in all those classes so please contact me if interested. My business phone is 727-535-9151 and 727-515-1317 for my cell. See you at Knight's! Thanks Norm & Jane
PS -- Please don't forget that the Guardsman Alarm System and Mylar window treatments make excellent Christmas gifts for those that you love!

Ugly Local Events (ULE) continue to occur with startling frequency. I am rapidly getting to the point that I don't even want to read the St. Petersburg Times news articles. Heck, I am not even sure that I want to read the comics anymore! The only saving grace is that we can usually learn something from these ULE. All articles are from the St. Petersburg Times. Here we go --

October 9, 2003 "Joke costs younger brother's life"

Brothers Jonathan and Jay Alvarez, 22 and 20 years-of-age respectively, lived at home in Tampa and were good friends. Jonathan was joking around, pointed a loaded gun at Jay and pulled the trigger. According to police, Jonathan told them "...meant it as a joke, not realizing the gun was loaded. Jonathan than pulled the trigger and fired once...." Jay was shot in the chest and died. To complicate matters, Jonathan "...has been arrested at least six times since, records show...." since 1999." Several of those were violent felonies which probably resulted in his disqualification to even own, possess or handle firearms.
Learning Points -- Safety, safety, safety. Finger off the trigger, always point in a safe direction and keep the firearm unloaded until ready to use. DON'T PLAY WITH GUNS! DON'T LET FELONS HANDLE FIREARMS!

October 9, 2003 "Teen who punched man faces new charge"

Seventeen year-old 11th grader Timothy D. Reid of St. Petersburg has had his charges upgraded from aggravated battery to manslaughter. Believe it or not, he struck 55 year-old Clarence Holley in the face during an argument over the damage of a $4.00 dollar plastic chair on September 22, 2003. Mr. Holley fell, struck his head and died two days later. Time to reread the book folks and also reread Tip #13 - Tigers and Sheep.
Learning Point -- Let it go folks! Forget about it! Report it to the police! It seems that people are being killed over "stupid stuff" all the time. Hardly worth a life and possibly 20 years in prison for a dadgum $4.00 chair!

October 10, 2003 "Three held in killing of man in $1.10 robbery"

This happened in Immokalee. Antonio Garcia (14), Joyrell Reed (21) and Brent Falcon (19) and an unnamed fourth teenager who is at large and believed to be the shooter, took the victim into a patch of woods near a small grocery store. They held him up and took $1.10 from him. Then the fourth scumbag shot and killed him apparently to prove "... that he had the heart to kill someone." Falcon then spent the $1.10 on ice cream! To top it off, these three big time gangsters and master criminals were arrested when one of the scumbags bragged about shooting the poor victim who was begging for his life.
Learning Points -- Do not allow yourself to be transported and isolated. Fight, kick, scream, bite, run, whatever it takes. Once you are isolated, you are at the scumbags mercy and there is very little available. Killed for amusement and as a "rite of passage" if you will for $1.10. The money was totally irrelevant -- killed for entertainment!

October 11, 2003 "Woman, 86, dragged to death by purse snatcher" & October 16, 2003 "Man charged in death of woman, 86"

An 86 year-old Lauderdale Lakes woman named Trudi Nadel was in a drugstore parking lot. A 20-year-old man identified as Luis Montanez attempted to steal her purse. He was in a van and grabbed the strap. Initial information was that she refused to give up her property. This heroic scumbag calls her over to his minivan and grabs her purse. She actually had the strap wrapped around her arm and could not get free. The scumbag drives away dragging her as she is screaming for help. She died from her injuries. This is particularly ugly because this woman, who had fled Nazi Germany in 1933, was killed in a drugstore parking lot by a punk. Reading between the lines and having dealt with scumbags of this ilk for 25 years, it seems that the October 16th article indicates that the murderer of this elderly woman was blaming the woman for her death and it's not his fault.
Learning Points -- Do not loop purses and backpacks and satchels over your neck. I have been known to walk up to strangers on the street and recommend that they drape the straps over their shoulders for safety. A similar type crime occurred with one of my former associates. She was dragged over 400 feet and disabled for life. She simply could not get out of the strap. Jane and I teach our female students to carry their purses on their weak shoulder and release the bag if grabbed. Bottom line -- property is not worth your life! Use your head and good tactics!

On a lighter note, how about "Morons With Guns?" It is really a good thing that breathing is autonomous or some of these idiots would take a coffee break and forget to restart breathing!

October 10, 2003 -- "Suspects flee store, but leave ID behind"

Drew Nash and Winston Lamar, 21 and 22 respectively, went into a Speedway convenience store in Stuart. The clerk noticed that Lamar seemed to have a gun in his waistband after she had asked him for ID to establish that he was old enough to buy beer. She asked if it was real and dummy advises it was a BB gun. He then slides it under the protective glass to show it was only a BB gun. She grabs it and Nash and Lamar then steal beer and a hot dog then flee the scene. Ooops -- forgot the identification and gun! No problem for this mental midget. About 30 minutes later, he calls back to the Speedway wanting his gun and ID back. The clerk tells them it's okay and the police have left the scene so come and get your property. You know the rest of course -- these two morons return to the store and are arrested. The police actually recommended that they try a new career path since they were lousy at stealing!
