Good afternoon my friends. Jane and I hope that the New Year is off to a good start for a safe and prosperous year for all. Please find hereunder information for the February 19, 2003, LOK meeting. The January meeting was fun and the members had a ball with the . 410 shotguns and moving targets. Looking forward to the March LOK -- rock & roll time again! By popular demand, 9MM submachine guns will be the featured firing event for that meeting as well as a Bio Terror Weapon expert! See you at Knight's!  Go Bucs!  Norm & Jane
PS -- I do have some spaces for the 2/1/03 & 2/9/03 CWP, the 2/8/03 Tactical and the 2/15/03 Ladies Only CWP. Please call if interested.

Ladies of the Knight Meeting -- February 19, 2003

1. Please note that the February 19, 2003 LOK meeting schedule is:
             A. Registration in the classroom from 6 - 7PM. Light refreshments will be served. In addition, April from Body & Sole Spa will again be doing free chair massages. Please note that tipping April is not mandatory but sincerely appreciated!
             B. The LOK meeting seminar will then be conducted from 7 - 8PM. Andra Stoller, formerly a Captain in the United States Air Force, will address the threat of terrorist use of weapons of mass destruction. Andra was a  Military Intelligence Analyst and actually presented a briefing on Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) to Rapid Response Teams at the Defense Nuclear Weapons School at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico on September 10, 2001. Check the timing on that one!
             C. The firing portion from 8 - 9:30PM will be . 22 cal rifles and handguns versus balloons. Talk about instant gratification! Each shooter will fire 25 rounds of  rifle and 25 rounds of pistol to break balloons. I am going to donate a Mahogany Metro Mini Q20-M Coronado Leather carry bag as a free raffle prize! The total cost for the ladies shooting the . 22 rifle and pistols will be $15.00. We will also offer any shooter the opportunity to fire 25 rounds of larger caliber handguns versus balloons for the ammunition cost. You may use your own handguns if you so choose but please plan on purchasing your ammunition at Knight's either before or during the event. If you need to use a range gun, that will be included in the basic cost. I will have a complete price list of 25 rounds of different caliber's at registration but the expense will range from $5.30 to $6.98 based on the LOK 10% Discount and sale! s tax. For example, 25 rounds of 9MM will be $5.30 and 25 rounds of . 40 caliber $6.98.  In addition, the retail store will again be open for your shopping pleasure -- remember, as LOK members you receive 10% off all regular priced items in the store except firearms & range time. We will also offer firearm cleaning advice and lessons during the firing portion as a concurrent training station. Jane will be available to answer questions about Coronado Leather products (already on sale) and accept special orders. Incidentally, both Knight's and I are still offering Gift Certificates!
             D. The total cost for the evening will depend on what you shoot. If you just wish to only attend the social and seminar portion, the cost is $10.00.  Please be advised that we will not be accepting deposits in advance. Please call Knight's (727-546-4447) or yours truly (727-535-9151 or 727-515-1317) or send me an email to advise that you will attend! We do appreciate knowing the number of attendees so that we may properly plan but walk-ins are more than welcome!

       2. Folks, please also remember that IDPA competitive shooting is scheduled for the 1st & 3rd Wednesday each month. Registration is at 6:30PM and the price is $6.50. Please note that all shooters will require 100 rounds of ammunition and eye & ear protection and that these items are not included in the $6.50 fee. Please remember two things -- first 25 get to shoot and please support Knight's by buying your ammo and accessories there. Ed, Mark and Marni will appreciate it! By the way ladies, IDPA shooting is not only for the men!

News Articles

1. It seems that no one is immune from ID Theft. A St. Petersburg Times January 22, 2003 story read "Two officers are among the victims of ID thefts." Five scumbags, apparently part of a Nigerian crime ring, were in federal court January 21 being charged with conspiring to open fraudulent bank accounts in others names by using stolen mail. The two women and three men will be charged with conspiracy, bank fraud & ID theft. Two of at least 10 victims were police officers; one from Largo and one from the Van Buren PD in Maine. The Largo officer reported his mail box broken into November 15 and a few days later an account was opened in his name at the Pinellas County Teachers Credit Union with many more later located. Please review Stay Safe Streets Tip #29 and #42. If you experience any mail thefts you may want to immediately notify the credit bureaus. FYI, Jane and I swear by a crosscut home shredder. Everything with info useful to a scumbag is destro! yed -- account numbers, checks, bill stubs, addresses, etc.

2. This is real reassuring! The St. Petersburg Times on January 8, 2003 reported that "Nearly half of Calif. sex offenders not tracked." This must really make California parents feel confident that their system works! The story advises that California "lost track of more than 30,000 sex offenders" even though "Megan's Law" requires such registration and tracking. The actual number reported "lost" is 33,296 (43.6%) of the states 76,350 sex offenders. Even better, the state is not even sure how many are actually out there because "...no one knows how many offenders never registered after leaving prison." Please review Stay Safe Streets Tips #37 & #39 to check on registered sex offenders in your area. Hopefully Florida is doing better than California but I am a little dubious. Imagine that -- criminals breaking the law!

3. The St. Petersburg Times reported in the January 25, 2003 edition that there was an attempted rape in the area of 55th & 62nd Avenues and 14th & 16th streets. The headline reads "Police seek suspect in attempted rape." About 5:45PM this scumbag went to the victim's home and stated that a colleague had left some tools in her home while servicing an appliance and that he needed to retrieve those tools. The 60-year-old woman invited him in and he attacked her. She resisted long enough for the woman's husband to return and the scumbag fled. The scumbags composite is located on page 3b, Local & Florida news if interested. Please review Stay Safe Streets Tip #35.

4. I sent out a brief message about the October 28, 2002, needless, preventable shooting death of a 3-year-old boy in Tampa. The boy was in the master bedroom with his two older sisters watching TV. The father had an unsecured .32 caliber pistol in his jeans pocket and the child was able to pick up the gun and then shoot himself in the throat. The child died five days later. The St. Petersburg Times headline on January 7, 2003 reads "Father charged in son's gun death." Tampa Police Department spokesperson Katie Hughes stated that "The fact that (Steven) Burchfield (the father) left the gun within arm's reach of a child resulted in the culpable negligence charge" which is a third degree felony. The sentence if convicted is five years in state prison. Please remember the law -- Florida State Statute 790.174 clearly states that allowing a minor (15 years of age and younger) unsupervised access to a firearm is a 2nd degree misdemeanor. However, you can parlay that into real time! if someone is either killed or wounded. Please remember -- secure your firearms! Knight Shooting Sports has excellent gun vaults for sale that will allow you to have security as well as availability. They also have trigger locks available. Imagine having to spend five years in state prison contemplating the fact that you killed your own son or daughter and destroyed your family. Personally, I think this guy needs the full 20 years!

Morons With Guns (MWG)

The Darwin Awards are great! This award is presented annually to those folks who kill themselves in stupid and ridiculous manners thereby improving the human gene pool. Some 2002 Darwin Award winners are:
       1. Daniel (2/14/02 - Pennsylvania). Daniel and his buddy were shooting at electrical insulators to improve their skill. They shot six insulators off two poles and live wires hit the ground. Daniel was concerned that there would be a fire so he runs over and picks up the sizzling live wire -- bye bye Daniel!
       2. Unnamed (January 2002 - Croatia). This Croatian moron was using a chainsaw to cut a hand grenade in half so that he could use the explosive to make firecrackers for the New Year. I wonder if he was surprised when the grenade blew up in his face!
       3. Carlos (2/4/02 - New Mexico). Three brilliant scumbags attempted to steal a firearm from a man who had advertised the gun for sale in a local newspaper. They arranged a meeting with the gunowner, beat and maced him and then tried to steal the firearm. Surprise, surprise! The gun owner not only had a gun for sale but he had another gun and shot and killed Carlos in self-defense! I guess it never occurred to them that he might have two guns! That's why they call it DOPE!
       4. Unnamed (2/15/02 - Russia). This clown goes into a bar near Moscow and was stopped by a security guard. The scumbag pulls his gun and points it at the guard who then deftly kicks the gun out of the scumbags hand. The gun lands on a pool table. The guard asked the guys playing pool to hand the gun to him. The Darwin winner uses the tip of his pool cue, which is placed in front of the trigger, to pick up the firearm. As the gun slides down the pool cue which becomes increasingly larger in diameter, the gun fires and kills the man holding the pool cue. Sounds like the dead 19-year-old was not only behind the 8 Ball but did not have a C(l)ue!
       5. Finally a potential winner for 2003. The St. Petersburg Times, dated 1/25/03, has a headline that reads "Gun kills man who beat dog with it." This event happened in Winchester, Virginia. This moron calls his wife at works and tells her that he was going to kill their 30-pound Shar-Pei because the dog had bitten him. The wife returns home at 6PM and finds her husband lying dead on the floor and the dog injured. The husband evidenced a number of dog bites and scratches and had been shot. I can only assume that this moroon was beating his dog with a live round in the chamber and the hammer at single action mode. He must have been using the barrel as a grip and hitting the dog with the butt when it discharged! I understand that Johnny Cochran has been hired to defend the Shar-Pei who is claiming self-defense. For those of you with either cats or dogs, please remember Rule #4 -- paws off the trigger until ready to fire!

Believe it or not, I did not make these five stories up -- they really happened! Just a word to the wise -- Safety, Safety & more Safety. Maintain a positive, proactive attitude at all times toward safe handling, storage, transport and usage. Don't embarrass your self by appearing as a 2003 Darwin Award Winner.
PS -- None of these clowns were students of Major Norm Belson, Inc.

STAY SAFE AND GOD BLESS AMERICA!
