Stay Safe Street Tip #41

Ladies Of the Knights , IDPA & Local Stupid Events

Good afternoon Folks. I hope all are doing well and staying safe. I do have a few administrative announcements before we begin. However, the best recent news is that the DC area killers appear to be in custody. I am waiting for the ramifications of this situation particularly in regard to the ID and professed Islamic ties of the scumbag shooter. Calling him a sniper is an insult to our honorable professional military snipers. Just as a note of interest, the technique used was first demonstrated in Israel by Palestinian terrorists and then in LA by street gangs. In addition, the scumbag was not a "sniper" but merely a once a year shooter required to be annually qualified during his military service. As I stated on Channel 8, he is nothing but a heartless, murdering, subhuman scumbag. He definitely does not deserve US criminal justice tender ministrations! However, we are a nation of law an! d that even applies to this cold-blooded murderer and his dirtbag accomplice. That is the difference between scumbags like these two and good citizens!  May they go to hell and then die! See you at Knight's!  Norm
PS -- I do have a few spaces open for the 11/9/02 Tactical Course. Please call me if interested.

November Ladies of the Knight Meeting

The next Ladies of the Knight Shooting Club meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 13. We will start with refreshments at 6:30PM, seminars from 7 to 8PM and then hand gun "low light" & "shoot/don't shoot" scenarios from 8 to 9:30PM. Donna Savastana, owner of Body & Sole in Safety Harbor, has a member of her staff that will give skin care tips and Joe Pine, owner of Suncoast Security, will provide information on burglary prevention. The cost for the evening will be  $20 and include range fees, firearms, ammunition and eye & ear protection. Please call Knight Shooting Sports (727-546-4447) to sign up. Incidentally, the October 15 meeting was a blast! Be sure to check out Dave Osborne's products for the Ladies of the Knight. He will have a display set up for purchase and orders!

IDPA Competition

Sorry for the delay but I am proud to announce that Knight Shooting Sports has initiated IDPA Competitive Shooting. The events are scheduled for the first & third Wednesdays of each month. The event begins at 6:30PM and usually wraps by 9PM. The cost is $6.50 per shooter and requires about 100 rounds of ammo as well as eye & ear protection. As I always recommend, you should have at least three magazines for your autoloaders but more would not hurt! I personally carry five for my Kimber. Please contact Joe Alba (727-546-4448) of Knight Shooting Sports for information. The events will be limited to 25 shooters so first come first served! By the way, please consider buying your ammunition and accessories from your host, Knight Shooting Sports. It is the right thing to do!

By the way, Christmas and the Holidays are coming. I have available gift certificates for home and business security surveys, training classes, law books & Coronado Leather products. Please advise if interested.

Lessons learned

As per usual, the St. Petersburg Times has a wealth of information that we can use to avoid becoming victims of violent, senseless crime. It never fails to amaze me that these crimes occur to good citizens when a portion of "street smarts" combined with situational and environmental awareness may have enabled us to avoid the event altogether. These are the types of situations that educate as well as make us "street smarter." Remember, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they are really aren't out to get you!

St. Petersburg Times  October 17, 2002  "Pasco mother catches intruder trying to take sleeping child"

Now this is definitely a scary scenario -- a parent's worst nightmare! You are asleep at 2AM. You hear strange noises from your 3 year old son's bedroom. You get up to check and an intruder is carrying your son and trying to flee your home, your Castle with your child! That is what happened to Theresa Nguyen in Land O'Lakes. The intruder entered through a locked and pinned sliding glass door and almost got away with the child. An intensive search of the area failed to reveal the scumbag. The home did not have an alarm system. I am a major proponent of alarm systems due to the tremendous uncertainty created in the mind of the scumbag burglar. Will the cops be notified? Will the residents be awakened? Will the neighbors be alerted? I also believe absolutely that my neighbor would be alive and his family not traumatized if he had an alarm system. I recommend without reservation the ProTec Guardian. You can protect your family with this state of the art, portab! le system for a starting price of $695 and have it installed and ready to go within about 3-5 seconds of it's arrival in your home. The neat thing is that there are no monitoring fees either with or without the dialer. I also want to remind you that I do home and business security surveys ($60 for a walk through & $250 for written with photos) to help keep the scumbags out! Please call me if you are interested.

St Petersburg Times  October 20, 2002  "Scuffle ends in teen's death"

Eighteen year old Matt Brassill had a reputation for "plowing through life" that led him to attempt to "...throw one last punch" at a group of apparently young men during a confrontation at 3AM in Ybor City. Unfortunately, the other guys were in a Mercedes Benz. His arm was grabbed and he was then dragged approximately 60 feet down the street at a high rate of speed. When released, he struck his head and died of head injuries. Pretty stupid way for a mother to lose her only son. Here is another example of Tigers & Sheep -- one in the graveyard and (hopefully) one in prison. The subjects have yet to be identified. Please take a few minutes and review Stay Safe Streets Tip #13 with your children.

St Petersburg Times  October 17, 2002  "Boy shot near ice cream truck" & October 18, 2002 "Wounded boy's world: 'A terrible street"

Nine year old Corey was shot approximately 6PM on 8th Avenue South in St. Pete. He committed the heinous offense of buying ice cream and then walking back to his house. As he was doing so, a car pulled up and several people (read scumbags) started shooting at a nearby house. At least one occupant (another scumbag) of that house returned fire. Per a St. Pete PD spokesman, "During the barrage of shooting, the boy was shot in the abdomen." An 18 year old, Jontavius Johnson was apparently one of the shooters. This dummy shot himself in the thigh during the shootout and was arrested while being treated at a local hospital. Here is the sad part -- there have been 72 calls for police service at this boy's home since January 2000 due to drug violations, warrant arrests, assistance calls, trouble calls and brawling. A Hell of a way to raise children! This a drug locale and there are only two solutions -- clean it up or move out! We had the start of a problem in our ! neighborhood a few years ago. I guarantee that every time they were out of line the deputies were called!  That problem no longer exists.

St Petersburg Times  October 21, 2002  "Woman accidentally shot father, police say"

Pinellas County deputies reported that a 31 year old woman accidentally shot her father in the chest while showing him her . 38 caliber revolver. Interestingly enough the accidental (read stupid) discharge occurred during a domestic altercation involving the 31 year old's mother. Yeah right, it was an accident! The father's wound was through & through and he was discharged after being treated at a hospital. I am sure that you have heard the term "sucking chest wound." From my experience all chest wounds suck! Major safety rules violated are:
#1 -- Don't point a firearm at anyone or anything that you do not intend to shoot.
#2 -- Finger off the trigger.
I guess since she violated at least two that makes her a "maroon" (double moron). Personally, the father seems to be at least a moron. Why would he stay in the area with his apparently agitated daughter waving a firearm around? His best bet would probably have been to go somewhere else quickly. I bet he will next time!

St Petersburg Times  October 25, 2002  "Cyclist hit in case of mistaken identity"

Here is another Tiger and Sheep incident with a neat twist. A 46 year old former triathlete, Martin Kehoe, is riding his bike north on Gulf Boulevard about 5PM. Four guys in a 1994 Saturn started harassing him about his red bike shoes and one of the mutts in the back seat shoved him as they drove by. There was an exchange of the required profanities of course and the four punks continued northbound. Martin caught up with these scumbags at a Chevron gas station and decided that he "...had to confront the men in the car." Brilliant idea! He did so and was apparently surprised when one of the guys started yelling at him and "...the driver came out and got really aggressive...." Martin then started to call 911 and when they threatened him, he fled on his bike to the Belleair Beach PD to report the incident. After doing so, Martin continues riding north and lo and behold, comes across an accident scene. Guess what! Another biker, 37 year old Craig Lester who was! wearing the same colored biking gear as Martin, was run down by the scumbag driver who thought Craig was Kehoe! Smooth move Martin. Refuse to let something go, challenge the scumbags and then let some innocent bike rider pay for your stupidity! Craig was severely bruised and released after treatment at Largo Med. Based on witness noting of the license tag, 22 year old Joseph John Barnes of Largo was arrested at 5:53PM and charged with Aggravated Battery With a Motor Vehicle. I also ride a bike for exercise and would have simply used my cell phone and called to report the crime (simple battery) when first shoved. Confronting the four punks is simply asking for a problem. Well, Martin got what he deserved but Craig paid the price. Stupid, stupid, stupid! Guess Martin really didn't want the confrontation that he created!
