Stay Safe Street Tip #40
Ladies of the Knight', Local Events & 9/02 Update
Good evening Folks.
Jane and I hope that all are well and staying safe. I do have three topics to
present today but do want to make a few brief administrative notes before doing
so. I have to admit that I am having a blast! I know that I am supposed to be
'retired' but working with my friends and students is not work. I don't go to
work anymore -- I go to Knight Shooting Sports and train with my friends and
colleagues. I just want to remind you that you may contact me at anytime if you
have either a security concern or question. I am committed to always providing
the best answer that I can through either my knowledge, research efforts or from
my buddy, Jon Gutmacher, author of Florida Firearms-Law, Use & Ownership.
I have been speaking with Joe Pine of Suncoast Security (Pro Tech Alarm Systems)
and Tony Davis of Glass Protection Services (Mylar Glass Gard). Joe and Tony
have both asked that I remind my students that they receive at least a 10%
discount on their products. Students that have purchased either the slick alarm
system or the Mylar Glass Gard are apparently very satisfied with the products,
personal service and professionalism of these knowledgeable brother shooters.
Please also don't forget that my Goods & Services listing has many other
shooters, such as Steve Morris (Madeira Beach Electric), Chris Cooper (Best Lock
& Safe) and Paul DiStefano (Done Right Carpentry) offering quality products and
services at a discount. Please advise me if you would like to be added to that
listing. The cost is right -- $0.00! All you have to do is agree to offer your
fellow students the same 10% discount as these other folks.
It looks like the competitive shooting events will kick off next month. The IDPA
type competition will probably be held the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month and
be open to men and women handgun shooters. I will email specifics to you within
the next few days hopefully.
Finally, I am offering a new type security survey for homes and businesses. I
will do a security "walk through" for $60.00 but neither a written report nor
photos will be provided. You and I will do this together and notes will be your
responsibility. I will still make appropriate recommendations "to keep the
scumbags out" and refer experienced security specialists to correct vulnerable
areas if desired and required. Of course, I will still provide a more formal
written report with photos and prioritized recommendations for $250 (includes a
fanny pack upgradable for an added fee to a purse). Please contact me if
interested. See you at Knight's! Norm
Ladies of the Knight
Jane and I were teaching a Ladies Only CWP class yesterday, September
21. There were only four students but it was an excellent, supportive and cohesive
group that really pulled together. Nothing unusual -- Ladies Only classes are
always that way! During the course of the class, Debi passed out pieces of paper
with her phone number and recommended that the ladies get together and shoot
socially since they were having so much fun. This grew into an idea developed
by Debi, Ellen, Donna, Kathy and Jane to start a Ladies Only Shooting Club.
Dadgum women -- I wish it were my idea! However, I came up with the name.
I think 'Ladies of the Knight' has a certain appeal particularly based
on my police experiences! We expect to start with monthly meetings during a
weekday evening beginning at 6:30PM at Knight Shooting Sports of course. The
first 30 minutes would be social. The next hour would be for invited guest speakers
(airline pilots, federal air marshals, counter-terrorism experts, crime scene
investigators, auto theft detectives, state special agents, medical care providers,
etc.) to present a program. The last hour would be for advanced shooting techniques
(handgun, shotgun, machinegun, etc). We don't envision either dues or formal
memberships but may issue member cards. I will simply notify my female friends
and students of the date, time, topic and expected expense for ammo & range
fees and then invite them to attend. Please email me if you are interested in
the idea and have any other topics that would involve other security type speakers.
See you at Knight's!
Recent St. Petersburg Times Stories
"Store clerk shot in robbery in stable condition" -- September 13, 2002
A convenience store clerk working in the Star Deli Food Store,
located at 2451 Fifth Avenue N. was shot in the chest during an armed robbery
September 12. The robbery and attempted murder occurred approximately 8PM
September 12. There were no arrests made in this crime so the scumbag with a gun
is still out there and may continue to hunt in the same area. Tip -- be sure
that you carefully look inside from the outside! There have been numerous
instances where innocent shoppers wander in while an armed robbery is in
progress. The recent killing of the Bradenton store clerk and a customer is an
excellent example. A customer was opening the door to the convenience store (AKA
Stop & Rob) when the two armed robber scumbags entered the store with an SKS
military rifle openly displayed. This 'moroon' (double moron) customer then
walked into the store behind the armed robbers and watched as the clerk and the
customer were gunned down!
"Store burglary nets $70,000 in equipment" -- September
14, 2002
The owner of A&B Audio arrived at his store at 8:30AM after
receiving an early morning phone call about a broken window. The thief or
thieves broke a small window at the front of the store and then crawled inside.
The alarm was disabled by cutting the telephone line. The rear door security
bars were unbolted and the deadbolts unscrewed. The scumbags then had to
apparently use a truck to haul off their stolen car amplifiers, stereo systems,
DVD players and navigation systems. This takes time. The owner hopes he has
enough inventory left to stay open for business. This store is on US 19 N near
Klosterman Road probably in a strip type mall setting. Tip -- since the majority
of residential and commercial burglaries are 'smash & grabs', protect your very
vulnerable door and window glass with Mylar Glass Gard. In addition, phone lines
should be hardened and a rotating beacon installed on the exterior of the
building that will attract attention from passersby if the alarm is tripped.
"Man, 81, robbed in home invasion" -- September 21,
2002
An 81 year old man was in the process of unloading his car when
two masked home invading scumbags burst into his home and surprised him. His
home is in East Bay Oaks on Starkey Road. The victim said that the scumbags,
apparently a man and woman based on their voices, " ... just barged in...." They
then tied him up and left him on the floor with his mouth duct taped and his
hands tied. The dirtbags left with his car keys, cell phone, about $200 and a
1992 Lincoln Towncar, white in color with a blue fabric top and Michigan plates.
It took him an hour to free himself. These scumbags are out there folks so be on
the lookout for the car. Tip -- This is easy! Keep your Dadgum doors locked. I
know it seems ridiculous but the simplest precautions will frequently preclude
criminal behavior. Most criminals are not only lazy but opportunists. I am not
sure but I'll almost bet that he had his car doors and/or house door wide open.
Sounds like an invitation to me. Jane is really good at this. Actually I must
admit that I get ticked having to unlock a door to get in my house from a
closed-door garage but at least she has good habits! Fortunately this victim was
not injured!

par. #8 A "withheld" on a nolo plea is not a domestic violence
“conviction” per current FDLE interpretation (see next note). However, if you
plead “guilty” or were found guilty after a trial, federal case law currently
considers it a “conviction” even if you got a “withheld”. This is due to an
incorrect interpretation of Florida law.
61-62 A person with a misdemeanor battery/assault “withheld adjudication”
involving “domestic violence” should not possess firearms under current federal
law if plead “guilty”; or if “found guilty” after trial. Only a “nolo” or “no
contest” plea with a “withheld adjudication” is currently acceptable, as “not a
conviction”. Also, under Florida law (and thus federal law) such a person can’t
purchase a firearm from a dealer, or obtain a concealed permit until 3 years
after probation or any other portion of sentence has elapsed. F.S.
790.065(2)(a)(3). The book incorrectly indicates that “possession”
of firearms was illegal for the three year period.

Our phone number on some early editions was printed incorrectly. It is: 407-650-0770.
We recommend the 1997 printing of the Fourth edition be
replaced as outdated, and suggest that replacement might be a good idea for any
printings before October 1999. If your local firearms dealer does not carry
this book ... Ask them, "why not?"
