Newsletter #18 – Driveway Holdups
Good evening all and welcome to a hopefully safe, prosperous and Happy New Year. There is a real dangerous scumbag armed robber working primarily in
the St. Petersburg area so please take note. If you do not live in St Pete, be aware that he can always change locations! Still have space for the 1/13/01 and 2/10/01 Basic with Defensive Tactics Course. Stay safe Norm
St. Petersburg Times 12/31/00 "Police seek one man in driveway holdups"
An armed robber has struck at least five times between December 23, 2000 And December 30, 2000 in the St. Petersburg area. Apparently this armed scumbag approaches his victims as they are either leaving their driveway, standing in their driveway or arriving in their driveway. When the situation presents itself, the robber blocks the driveway with his car and then sticks a firearm in the victim's face and demands money, jewelry and other property. He has not fired his weapon yet but did pistol whip an 83 year old male with a resultant neck fracture. The last two robberies were at 7:05 PM and 7:20 PM December 30, 2000; the former in the 4600 block of 27th Avenue N and the latter in the 5400 block of Fourth Avenue S. He also is believed to have followed at least one of his victims from a restaurant on 34th Street N. There have been women present at all the robberies but there were at least two men present one of whom was a Pinellas County Deputy Sheriff. The scumbag is described as a black male, approximately six feet tall and about 185-190 pounds. He is in his mid 20's and was last seen driving a dark two-door Oldsmobile Cutlass. Please be careful as you enter and leave your home. Be prepared to either exit your vehicle after parking or leave as soon as you are in the car. If you have a garage, it is recommended that you use your remote garage door opener to open the door. You then ensure that your doors are locked, back into (preferred) or drive into the garage, keep the motor running and close the garage door with your remote before you exit the vehicle and after you checked to assure that no one slipped under the door. If someone is in with you, drive through the garage door! They can be replaced and you will attract a lot of attention in a hurry! If you need to unload the car, do so in the garage if possible. If you think you are being followed, you may check for a "tail" by making either four left or four right turns in a row being sure to comply with all posted traffic rules. If someone makes the same turns, do not panic but proceed to the nearest safe place (police station, fire station, etc) and use your cell phone to call for help! Do not confront that person and do not lead him to your home, business or any other place that you routinely frequent. There is no sense in giving him a start point if he wants to find you again! This guy is pretty brazen and working early in the evening so - be careful! Stay Safe!!!
