hope all are well and preparing for the Thanksgiving Holiday. It might be a good
idea to be more security conscious as we move into the holidays. Burglaries and
robberies, to include home invasions and carjackings, seem to be up in the area.
The old police saying is "Tis the season to be thieving!" Also a brief reminder
about the December 11, 2002, Ladies of the Knight meeting -- sub machine-guns
are a blast! Enough said. I also want to clarify that the IDPA cost is $6.50 but
ammunition, firearms and eye & ear protection are NOT included in that
amount. Each competitor is responsible for their own firearm, ammunition and eye
& ear expenses. By the way, 100 rounds are required for the evening. I also
believe that you should buy your firearms, supplies, ammunition and accessories
at Knight's, your gracious host for the competition.
In September 2000, I submitted Stay Safe Street Tip #13 entitled "Tigers &
Sheep" to my students in my website, www.staysafestreets.com. This was a
detailed analysis of an idiotic, senseless shooting that occurred in Tampa at
the Countryway subdivision. The event started with a simple fight between two 12
year old boys. It rapidly escalated out of control when the adults became
involved and acted more childlike than the children. The result was that a
retired military veteran, Jemale Wells, was shot dead during the fracas and a
dentist, Randy Puryear, was arrested and charged with Manslaughter, subsequently
upgraded to 2nd Degree Murder. I was correct when I stated that "If anyone had
acted rationally . . . Puryear is not facing the prospect of at least 20 years
in prison." Randy Puryear, the respected Town & Country dentist was convicted of
2nd Degree Murder, Carrying A Concealed Firearm and two counts of Aggravated
Assault With A Deadly Weapon. His minimum se! ntence by Florida law is 25 years
in prison with the possibility of a life sentence! In my opinion, he now goes
from being a doctor to being a scumbag convicted murderer who will probably die
in the Florida prison system. I must also admit that in my opinion, the gravest
miscarriage of justice is that the primary instigator, Sherri Toney, the mother
of the white 12 year old involved in the fight, escapes unscathed. Her role was
absolutely key and set the stage for the whole tragedy. It does not seem just
that she fails to share Puryear's fate! My friends, please take a few minutes to
reread Tip #13 and share it with your children, family and friends. I don't
consider prison gray and body bags to be suitable attire!

Good morning Folks. Hope all are staying well and safe. I do have two administrative pieces of information before we discuss "Tigers and Sheep", a subject that I have discussed previously and consider absolutely imperative in order to avoid incarceration and litigation. I must admit that it never fails to amaze me how moronic ordinary, responsible and educated citizens can be when "Tigerism" reigns supreme! Knight Shooting Sports continues to make progress toward their new "state of the art" range. I have attached a flyer that will really whet your appetite! Don't forget to let me know if you want to be included on the Charter Member list!! The storm season still has a few months to run and vandal & burglar season never ends. A group of young black and white boys were involved in a fight in the Countryway subdivision of Tampa the afternoon of 9/10/00. During the fight a responsible, retired black military veteran and advertising consultant, named Jemale Wells,interceded to stop the fight. In so doing, he allegedly grabbed a 12 year old white boy by the arm, cursed him and then sent him home. The 12 year old ran home crying and told his mother that he had been grabbed by the arm by Wells. The 12 year old's mother, Sherri Toney, immediately drove over to the scene and entered into a verbal argument with Wells that resulted in Toney allegedly calling Wells racial names. Wells then allegedly responded by grabbing Toney by the neck and throwing her to the ground. Toney is then reported to have literally crawled to her car and made a failed effort to call 911. Toney then called her boyfriend, a responsible white dentist named Randy Puryear, who had just left the Bucs game. Puryear drove immediately to the scene. As Puryear exited his vehicle, he stuck his .357 Magnum (unknown if he had a CWP) in the front of his belt. Puryear and Wells entered into an argument, apparently fueled by Toney, that included derogatory racial slurs. Wells and a neighbor then reportedly began striking Puryear with their fists. At this point, Puryear fired the weapon striking Wells in the abdomen. There were conflicting reports whether or not the gun was pointed at Wells before the fight or during the fight. The only thing truly a fact is that Wells died from exsanguination (uncontrolled bleeding) due to a gunshot wound to the abdomen at 5:28PM; 12 minutes after the first EMS call. Puryear was then taken into custody by an off-duty Clearwater police officer who lived in the area and was then charged with manslaughter (Wells) and aggravated assault (pointing the firearm at the neighbor) and released on $75,000 bond the next day! How moronic! All of that over a fight between kids. The worst part of the whole mess is that at any point in the entire debacle, if anyone had acted rationally, the tragic action is halted and Wells does not die and Puryear is not facing the prospect of at least 20 years in prison.
They all should have done the "right thing" as is expected and required of good citizens. I consider this a classic case of too many Tigers and no Sheep. Unfortunately, exactly as stated in class, there is one Tiger in the grave and one Tiger that should be in a cage! Remember that the state requires that a good citizen retreat in the event of an attack unless you are in your home, business or curtilage of your property and your duty to retreat only expires if continued retreat would either increase your hazard or retreat either is or becomes impossible. I always stress that force must be used defensively and never offensively! Please reread Jon's book about the "Retreat Rule". It just seems so stupid to destroy lives and families over a kids' fight! As a note, none of the parties involved were students of Gary W. Belson Firearms Instruction School! One final word. During the Viet Nam war, we grunts referred to dead grunts as "Wasted". How appropriate for this totally needless and preventable tragedy!!!!! Stay Safe
